I’ve read in several places that lamb and rice food is best for beagles and other dog breeds with long ears because it helps prevent ear infections.
Anyone know the reasoning behind that? My beagle pup loves his lamb and rice canidae all life stages, so I have no intention of switching, but it’s got me curious!

I rescued my american bulldog mix this winter, not knowing all of her seasonal allergy issues. So far this summer she’s had two cortisone shots. Her skin develops hives, which eventually lead to hairless spots. She also chews her feet constantly and scratches her ears to the point of drawing blood. Our vet wants to start Atopica once her latest cortisone shot wears off, but it is insanely expensive! I want desperately to calm her skin and relieve her discomfort, but almost 0 a month for medication (even the generic) doesn’t exactly fit into my college student budget. I already give her 100 mg of benadryl, brewers yeast tablets, and a fish oil blend every day with no improvement. I should also add that her food is an allergy friendly lamb and rice blend. Does anyone know of a less expensive alternative?

She’s a 7 month old Chihuahua who stays indoors with plenty of space and love and care. She’s been trained to ‘go’ in the bathroom but occasionally she mostly urines and rarely poops just outside the toilet or around the house and even picks her poop up and play with it on the floor mat and her pillow. I think with her doing so has made my face allergic to her fur and kisses. She also scratches more than a normal dog should normally around her face and around the ears and collar. She’s checked for fleas, ticks or lice and she’s clean. I feed her Blackwoods lamb and rice dry food to keep her from shedding too much. What could be her problem?
She poops and plays with it when we’re asleep or out of the house normally. She knows not to do it when we’re around. When we discover the accidents, she flattens her ears, tail goes down and she runs. As for her scratching, I think I bath her too often, around once a week or two weeks because she’s playing with her poop and dirties herself and smells. She gets loads of love and attention, cuddles, kisses, games and back scratches. She is almost never alone at home for more than half and hour.

I have a 2 and a half year old Affenpincher. Over the last week I notice she has been scratching her ears lot. Today I finally held her down to look. Her skin is dry and pealing a little in her right ear. Than I looked in the left there is a scab. Both ears are red. What do you think could be causing it? I have her on 4 health Lamb and Rice dog food because she was having allergies before mainly her eyes were draining a lot. She had ear mites 2 years ago I don’t think that is it. Plus I have 2 other dogs and a cat who’s ears are completely fine. Is there something I can put on it?

I have a chinese crested powderpuff and she has tear stains. I make sure to keep her eyes dry, I’ve tried changing her diet, I’ve tried vinegar solutions, the tear stain cleaning pads, scrubbing them while she is in the bath. I’ve shaved them to start over fresh and clean but I’m starting to think that a trip to the vet might be the only answer if I don’t see a change. She is eating Canidae All Life Stages Lamb & Rice flavor right now. She is not allowed to eat any form of people food what so ever. She has regular healthy looking bowel movements. She gets her ears plucked and cleaned to keep them dry and clear of debri. She doesn’t favor her ears and the tear stains do not have an odor. For those of you that have had white dogs with tear staining, what did you find that the root cause was or what are some things you did that made you notice some change in the staining?

HELP!! I’m at a loss of what to try next… tried allergy dog food-they itch more, 5 ingredient dog food-still itching and now ears involved. Didn’t have to much problem on Iams Lamb and Rice but now they are acting up on that… I can’t win.. Allergic to Chicken, beef they love but found to start to itch on it.. I know Minni has a second allergy to dust.. Someone said to go to canned food.. but won’t that make their teeth go bad?? Have tried- Natural Balance, California Natural, BlueDiamond, and a few others that I can’t think of right now.. Thinking of doing allergy test on them.. They can do this with a blood test?? Any suggestions welcome.. Thanks

I took my dog to the vet last week because I noticed how red and smelly his ears where when he was shaking – turned out he had a bad yeast infection. The vet suggested along with the medication I received to change his dog food from lamb & rice to a potato & fish to help in the long run.
He usually eats California Natural Lamb & Rice dry food (because he’s allergic to chicken), and we’ve been trying out California Natural Sweet Potato & Herring, but he stomach doesn’t seem to agree w/ it, so I’d like to try some other potato and fish food, any suggestions?
My vet really liked that he was eating California Natural because it’s single source protein and single source carbohydrates, so whatever I try out has to be the same quality. And please only dry food suggestions.
thanks!

Over the past 6 months I have taken my dog to the vet twice for the same ear infection. The first time the vet gave us Otomax drops and a liquid earwash and we used both as long as we were supposed to and thought he was fine. (The vet said it’s a yeast infection in the ears btw.) The infection is back (or never went away), we went to a different vet for a different opinion hoping to get some different meds to get rid of the infection and the vet says to continue using what the other vet gave us even though obviously the stuff didn’t work. The vet also says the yeast infection is caused by food allergies but to test for what exactly he is allergic to would cost hundreds of dollars that I don’t have. We have switched to a salmon and lamb flavored Wellness dog food, obviously that is not working. Isn’t there a pill I can give him to get rid of the infection? What can I do? Any suggestions? Only serious answers please, I am desperate, love my dog to death and not getting rid of him!

I just noticed today that my dog has a tiny bump where her whiskers are. It looks like a pimple ready to pop, but flesh-toned and red in the middle. She is a lab mix, about four years old. She has been having some skin problems lately. The last time we took her to the vet we were told to give her lamb and rice food because her allergies to beef and chicken were giving her dandruff and dirty ears. She’s been on the lamb and rice diet for about two months now, but the past week she’s had some dry patches on her underbelly that look very red and scabby. I gave her some pedigree wet food for a treat yesterday, I hope that isn’t what triggered the reaction on her lip. If anyone knows what this could be please respond!
