Lamb and rice food — why?

Monday, July 26th, 2010

I’ve read in several places that lamb and rice food is best for beagles and other dog breeds with long ears because it helps prevent ear infections.

Anyone know the reasoning behind that? My beagle pup loves his lamb and rice canidae all life stages, so I have no intention of switching, but it’s got me curious!

I think my dog may be allergic to her food?

Thursday, April 7th, 2011

I have been doing research on the internet, and I believe that based on my GSD’s symptoms, she is allergic to her food. She gets ear infections (goes away with Otomax), gets zit like things with pus in them, and chews in between her feet/between pads until they are red and raw. I am going to make a vet appointment just to make sure. Her current food is Kirkland Lamb and Rice formula, which is a grain based food however I do feed her meat separately. She has tried other brands and seems to have the same issues. Do her symptoms sound like a food allergy? If so, how am I to know what ingredient she is specifically allergic to?
Thanks!

Why does my dog keep getting ear infections?

Sunday, September 26th, 2010

My 3 year old lab mix has had 6 ear infections (yeast) in the last year. I do clean them regularly. I changed her food to canidea lamb and rice. She is seen by her vet on a regular basis. What else can I do to help prevent this?

What is the best type of food for a dog with allergies?

Monday, July 5th, 2010

I have a 5 year old black Labrador. He has recurring ear infections, dry skin, and recurring loose stools. I already know that he suffers from allergies. At his last vet visit (late August of this year) the vet suggested that I switch him to a lamb and rice based dog food. I began feeding him Purina One Lamb & Rice. He’s 85 lbs. and I feed him 2 cups of food twice a day.

His dry skin and ear problems have subsided somewhat, but his stool is still loose. He only goes 2 times a day on average. So he doesn’t have excessive bowel movements, it’s just that when he does go, it’s never solid.

Any suggestions on a different brand of food that might help him to have normal bowel movements?

Dog keeps getting ear infections but has super clean ears?!!?? help!?

My 1 year old aussie keeps getting ear infections. His ears are perfectly clean though, no brown or black crud. No oozing, nothing.

I clean his ears 1-2 times a month and after every bath/swimming/ect with "vets best" it has a ear clean and then an ear dry tube to use:
vets best: http://www.petco.com/Assets/product_images/0/031658100231C.jpg

I know he has something wrong with his ears because he keeps shaking his head and will tilt it every so often before he shakes his head. There is no "squishy" noise if you gently massage his ear so there isnt mosture in the ear. i checked with a cotton ball as well and it came out dry.

He had one about 4-6 months ago too and at that time it was an "innner ear infection" they gave him 3 shots, one was a steriod and that fixed it. It was ! and i dont like the idea of him getting steriods all the time for these ear infections either, beside 0 a year on ear infections plus all the other expenses and toys, gas money time off work to go/ect is going to really drain the bank.

He just started showing these signs last night and if there isnt anything else to be done and he is still haveing problems or it gets worste I WILL take him to the vet again in the next few days.(i love my dog and feel stongly on keeping them healthy and safe)

I know with kids the doctors are saying that most ear infections work themselves out in a few weeks, is it the same for dogs?

Im not asking for "veternarian advice" just asking if anyone else has had to deal with this with their dog, if so what did you find to be the problem/solution?

-his food doesnt have corn/wheat by-products or other junk. (from petstore lamb meal first ingredient)
so i dont think it is his food…

anyone?

Dog foods for dogs with food Allergies?

So, I’m guessing my dog is having allergy problems with his dog food. We Used to feed him Solid Gold, and he never had problems before, but It got a little expensive. Right now, we’ve been feeding him Science Diet Lamb & Rice Large breed [Which I don't like feeding him] and He is having reactions! He’s been getting ear infections, and skin issues as seen here:

What do you suggest for dog foods to feed him? I have a Co-Op down the road, as Well as a Petco. I trust the Co-Op More, they sell Solid Gold, Wellness, Nutro, Canidae, Hollistic Select, Blue Seal, and a few others.

Any suggestions for my boy?
