My dog has diarrhea off and on. Could it be a food intolerance? What food should I try?

Friday, February 25th, 2011

My papillon has diarrhea off and on, and I think he might have a food intolerance. I currently feed him Wellness small breed adult, and the first 5 ingredients are Deboned Turkey, Chicken Meal, Salmon Meal, Oatmeal, Ground Brown Rice. I’m thinking maybe a food with only one protein source would be the place to start. My cousin recommended Diamond Natural, and they have a lamb and rice formula for small breeds that I may try, what are some other foods I should look at? Should I avoid chicken and stick to lamb, or is the turkey or salmon a more likely culprit?
For treats, he generally gets chicken and brown rice sticks from Trader Joe’s, Three Dog Bakery apple and oatmeal roll over rewards, breathies chicken jerky. I’ve also been trying out pedigree dentasticks for his teeth.

What food should I feed my puppy?

Sunday, February 13th, 2011

I have a 4 month old German Shepherd mix named Luna. The shelter gave her to us with a pack of science diet, but we don’t like science diet, so we switched her slowly over to blue buffalo by mixing the foods together until she was completely off of science diet. She started having diarrhea once she was completely on blue buffalo, and we thought it was just because she had just switched, but it’s been 2 months, and she still has diarrhea. We have a petsmart and a local pet store in my town, so we went to the local one to buy her some food, but they didn’t have blue buffalo. We asked why, and they said they don’t carry it anymore because it gives a lot of dogs diarrhea. So we were glad that we weren’t the only ones, but I am a bit confused as to why people think it is such a great food, if it gives dogs diarrhea. So now we have no idea what to feed Luna. We bought a small bag of California Natural puppy food to see if it would be any better, but I would like to know if we should use this dog food, or get another one. Oh, and the first 3 ingredients are Lamb Meal, Brown Rice, and Sunflower Oil.

P.S
We also want to switch our cats because blue buffalo gives them diarrhea too and we bought them a small bag of Health Wise cat and kitten food. The first 4 ingredients are Chicken Meal, Brown Rice, Chicken, and Chicken Fat. So any suggestions for my cats would also be helpful

P.P.S
We got the cat/kitten kind because we have a rather underweight cat.

is this dog food good?

Saturday, January 29th, 2011

i had originally planned to get a Coat Care Grooming Kit from a fortunate dog.com as my aunt is getting her a crate…well i got a call from her brother and he got her the grooming kit…

i found some dog food i think might be good it has chicken & chicken meal in it , Ground Barley, Chicken Fat (Stabilized with Mixed Tocopherols), Lamb Meal, Ground Brown Rice, Ground Oats, Flaxseed Meal, Tomato Pomace, Natural Flavors, Fish Oil (Natural source of DHA), Alfalfa Meal, Yeast Culture, Salt, Taurine, Vitamin E Supplement, Choline Chloride, Zinc Sulfate, Zinc Proteinate, Vitamin A Supplement, Vitamin D3 Supplement, Sweet Potatoes, Carrots, Blueberries, Cranberries, Dried Chicory Root, Raspberries, Turmeric, Niacin Supplement, Ferrous Sulfate, Manganese Sulfate, d-Calcium Pantothenate, Manganese Proteinate, Copper Proteinate, Thiamine Mononitrate, Copper Sulfate, Vitamin B12 Supplement, Riboflavin Supplement, Pyridoxine Hydrochloride, Calcium Iodate, Folic Acid, Biotin, Selenium Yeast, Sodium Selenite, Rosemary Extract, Dried Yeast Fermentation Solubles.

for skimmers…there is no corn or soy..there is lamb meal.
i like it because it’s a high energy breed and this food has.30% crude protein & 20% crude fat & 0.50 DHA *minimum* (which is the highest ive seen usually ranges 0.10-0.20. Omega-6 Fatty Acids 3.50%, 20%, Crude Fiber (maximum) 4%, Moisture (maximum) 10%, Copper (minimum) 25 mg/kg, Manganese (minimum) 35 mg/kg, Zinc (minimum) 170 mg/kg, Vitamin A (minimum) 12,100 IU/kg, Vitamin E (minimum) 275 IU/kg, Taurine (minimum)* 0.03%, Omega-3 Fatty Acids (min.)*0.45%,

as i said high energy breed, it will be a puppy when she gets it. breeder is reputable from the breed club but is actually using a lower quality food that would make some of the people on here freak out.
i want to get her some food to promote proper development in the range of what they need.

**** the desired intake for this pup (from handlers at show) 10-18% crude fat & 21-28% crude protein.

"a puppy should be on the higher end of the scale possibly a bit above, while an adult should be in the middle or towards the bottom" quote.

good idea? or do you have another PUPPY food in mind that meets the requirements AND has high DHA?

also as the link didnt work you can copy and paste it
17lb’s for 26.99 (but it’s generally 29.99)
jack: Contrary to popular belief, it’s not always the "first five" or "first seven" ingredients listed that make up the major portion of a product. The number of main ingredients actually depends on the specific formulation of a food and the degree of variety included, so one brand may have only three or four main ingredients, while another could have eight or ten.

What you need to look for is the first source of fat or oil that appears in the ingredient list. This can either be from an animal or vegetable source, there are good and bad ones of both, but more details on that later. Anything listed before that first source of fat, and including it, are the main ingredients of the food. Any other items are present in much smaller amounts to add flavor, function as preservatives, help with the manufacturing process or provide dietary benefits (e.g. probiotics, vitamins and minerals).
also it is on your 4 star list on that site.
