my dog (Dogo) smells after a bath…?

Wednesday, May 25th, 2011

she’s 10, was eating kibbles & bits for a long time, changed to real nutrients? a lamb & rice mix with no corn, she has spots that are almost like flea bites, but she gets frontline, has had a flea bath, & is getting probiotics mixed with her food. it is getting better, but she still gets a few of these spots, rubs them (rolling on her back) & they bleed slightly. she has not ever had fleas. she stays indoors, has been to the vet & given meds for "allergies" & she scratches her hair in places & has some slight bald spots.

I have 2 german shepards approaching 10 yrs old. One is experiencing liver failure. What causes this?

Both have always eaten the same food.
Kirkland dry lamb & rice with Kirland can. Is this brand safe? Is there any diet that will help my dog?

I know there have been a lot of questions like this lately, but I'm just wondering….?

Friday, April 29th, 2011

I feed my dog Canidae Lamb & Rice, and I know that they’re going to change their formulas. So I have three questions…

1) Is it worth changing? Is the food still going to be high quality?

2) They said on their website that they’re making the food more digestable. Does that just mean they’re adding a bunch of crappy fillers?

3) If I still wanted to keep my dog on Canidae Lamb & Rice, would I have to switch gradually from the original formula to the new one?

Thanks you guys!!! ?
Isn’t millet supposed to be in bird food??? lol

What can I do to fix my dog's chronic diarrhea?

Sunday, April 24th, 2011

A little background: I have a rescue pup, he is now about 8 1/2 months old. We’ve had him in our home since he was 10 weeks old. He’s had problems with diarrhea off and on since we’ve brought him home. He is up to date on all his shots, deworming, etc. He will have what seems to be a ‘normal’ poo mixed in with a bout of diarrhea in the same movement.

We’ve tried him on higher protein foods, then at lower protein foods, on a mix of plain rice and kibble, and just plain rice (when the diarrhea was really really bad, and at the advice of our vet who felt he had picked up a bit of a flu bug). Right now he’s on California Naturals brand Lamb & Rice formula, which is a high-quality (not grocery store) food.

He doesn’t seem to feel sick or lethargic but I know it’s not normal. Also, it makes it very annoying because it’s so runny there’s nothing to really ‘pick up’ and our neighbors think we just let him poop everywhere and never clean it.

Is it his diet? Is there something we can start feeding him to help regulate him?
I should note that I haven’t changed his diet ‘often’ as in like every week or anything. I’ve had him about 5 months and we’ve tried three different foods, plus the rice diet. Also, my vet did run tests, although I don’t know if each of those specific diseases were tested for. I’ll be sure to ask her.
Oh yeah, also, to dhmcconniel – we also have tried a cheaper food at the advice of the vet to see if it helped … Kirkland Lamb & Rice.

Dogs Eating Less in the Summertime?

Sunday, April 17th, 2011

Has anyone else noticed their dogs eating less in the summer? I have 2 big dogs (Gordon Setters) and 2 small dogs (Papillons), and they sometimes go a couple days without eating, especially the Gordons.

They are not sick-up to date on all shots, heartworm pills, etc, they just go off their food. They lose weight, and I end up throwing a lot of dog food away that I can’t really afford to.

I feed Purina ONE lamb & rice with a little canned mixed in for flavor; they eat well other times of the year. Any suggestions how I can keep them from wasting their food?
Um… I am NOT going to leave the same food in the bowls for weeks at a time, sorry. Their bowls get washed every day. I might consider leaving the canned off and just putting dry down through the summer, but that’s as far as it will go for me!

My Dog's Stomach Gurgles A Lot?

Friday, April 15th, 2011

I have a 3 year old mutt and his stomach gurgle almost everyday. He eats regularly and has no problem with his bowel movements. At first I thought it might of been the food so I changed it from Purina One Lamb & Rice Flavor to Purina One Sensitive Systems Salmon Flavor thinking that it would help, but it hasn’t.

Could there be some other reason for the gurgling besides hunger or upset stomach?
Is this something I should be worried about?

Did California Natural dog food change their recipe when they were bought by P&G?

Tuesday, March 22nd, 2011

I have two Boxers and have been feeding them California Natural dog food (Lamb & Rice) for over two years. They were doing great on it, their coats were shiny and thick and they loved it. Recently (within the past month or two), they have horrible, room clearing gas and diarrhea. Nothing else has changed about their diet. I read that P&G bought the dog food company recently and am suspicious that the recipe has changed (for the worse). I did not keep any bags previously to compare ingredients, so I can only guess if it changed. My Boxers had horrible gas on Iams (also P&G) so I’m really hoping that they aren’t using the same ingredients and just charging us an arm and a leg for what we think is California Natural.

Do dogs need to eat hard foods? Or can soft foods be just as good?

Sunday, March 20th, 2011

I got a dog from a shelter a year ago. Despite trying many kinds of dry foods and wasting a lot of money, he will not eat it. The only thing he will eat is canned Iams Lamb & Rice. The hard food I would set out, not offering him anything else and he would go up to a week without eating before I gave in and gave him his canned. His teeth are fine, had my vet check them. 23lb Terrier mix. I give him Milk bones that he chews down to nothing within a few hours so there is nothing wrong with his teeth. Can a dog live off canned food his entire life without health issues or do I need to just keep trying? He is not an aggressive eater but he is a shy eater. He will not eat if anyone is looking at him and will grab a mouth full of the canned, run and hide under something to eat it. He’ll happily eat treats in front of me though.
I’ve tried Pedigree, Purina, Evo, Blue Buffalo, Iams dry, Kibbles n Bits.

How to get rid of tear stains on your dog?

Friday, March 18th, 2011

I have a chinese crested powderpuff and she has tear stains. I make sure to keep her eyes dry, I’ve tried changing her diet, I’ve tried vinegar solutions, the tear stain cleaning pads, scrubbing them while she is in the bath. I’ve shaved them to start over fresh and clean but I’m starting to think that a trip to the vet might be the only answer if I don’t see a change. She is eating Canidae All Life Stages Lamb & Rice flavor right now. She is not allowed to eat any form of people food what so ever. She has regular healthy looking bowel movements. She gets her ears plucked and cleaned to keep them dry and clear of debri. She doesn’t favor her ears and the tear stains do not have an odor. For those of you that have had white dogs with tear staining, what did you find that the root cause was or what are some things you did that made you notice some change in the staining?

My 2 German Shepherd has been scratching & biting her elbows rare. I've tried Benedril, doesn't seem to work.?
