Should I feed a high protein food to my dog? He doesn't gain weight!?
Saturday, August 20th, 2011I currently feeding him kirkland lamb and rice. but he isn’t gaining weight!! hes fine but I can still see his ribs, I even feed him 1/2 a cup more than I should but hes still the same! He isn’t very active and the vet said he is healthy. I don’t want people thinking I’m starving my dog!
I was thinking of feeding him Canidae pure sea. http://www.amazon.com/Canidae-Pure-Food-Salmon-15-Pound/dp/B001QEAUZO/ref=sr_1_1?s=pet-supplies&ie=UTF8&qid=1313719537&sr=1-1

Is Diamond Lamb and Rice adult formula a good food?
Friday, August 19th, 2011I am thinking of switching my dogs to Diamond Lamb & Rice Adult formula from Blackgold Performance. I am hoping it will help them gain some weight and put on a better glossier coat. I don’t read corn or any by products in the ingredients. And it’s only a bag. Have you fed this food and what are your opinions of it?
My terrier has had her anal glands rupture twice. How can I prevent it?
Monday, August 15th, 2011It’s been a few months since she’s had problems with them but I know they’re going to come back again. She’s going in for her yearly shots/check up in April and we’ll probably talk about causes. I wanted to know if there was anyone that’s experienced with small dogs and anal gland ruptures.
She’s an 18 pound terrier mix (Jack Russell, Poodle supposedly) she’s fed 1/2 cup twice a day of California Natural Lamb & Rice low fat (the highest fiber food that I’ve found). We add water to every meal and always has access to water. We tried cod liver oil for a few months but didn’t notice much of a change in stool. She has always had ROCK SOLID stool that I don’t understand how. I haven’t been able to find anything online about dogs with hard stool and ruptured anal glands. I’ve tried expressing her anal glands myself but find it almost impossible.
Has anyone else had this problem with small breed dog? and how did you solve it?
I really don’t want to go through with my dog having ruptured anal glands again because it’s bloody, pussy, and takes a while to heal because there’s an extra hole in her bottom.
Is a small does of Ibupropin OK for a 17 mo old GSD?
Saturday, August 13th, 2011Is a small does of Ibupropin OK for a 17 mo old GSD? She enjoys playing with a Husky her own age, but the Husky is a sturdier dog and Mindy has I think sprained something in her left front leg. It has been a couple weeks now, but she isn’t showing the recovery I would like to see. Besides confining her, what can I do? Is a small does of Ibupropin OK for a 17 mo old GSD?
Her food is Costco’s Lamb & Rice, which contains glucosamine and condrotin and I have just started giving her some additional in tablet form. A friend told abut Alfafa tablets that horses eat, that may be a natural anti-inflamatory. Any experience with alfafa or ibubropin.
I live over 90 miles from the vet and was hoping to help the dog.
Any advice, suggestions would be much appreciated.
Thanks
Question about dog food?
Thursday, July 28th, 2011I have two Shih Tzu’s currently eating Pro Plan Lamb & Rice dry food. I used to feed it to them mixed with canned food, but weaned them off of the canned stuff about 2 weeks ago, which has helped with harder poops and what not. One of my dogs has constant itching on her back and stomach, and I don’t know what the problem is. She has seen the vet who suggested it’s just seasonal allergies (no scabies or anything, they did a test). I think it has something to do with the food.
I’m wondering if it’s the grains in the food. I am thinking about switching them to a grain free food like Blue Wilderness or Wellness Core, but am wondering if cutting out grains would be a shock to their system… I’ll switch gradually by mixing, but I wanted to check to see if getting a grain free food is really worth the extra cost. And I’m also wondering what type to get… Chicken products seem to give her the runs, so was wondering if I should get salmon or duck? I imagine the salmon would be better for her skin? I’m so paranoid that she won’t like the fish food and I’ll waste my money on it…
Sorry for all the questions, I’m just trying to find the right food for my dogs without breaking the bank in the process! If you can recommend a food that isn’t crazy expensive, please do so! Thanks!
Why does my dog have a watery/mucus stool?
Tuesday, July 19th, 2011I took my 1 year old Great Dane/American Bulldog to the vet on Monday and the doctor checked his anal glands and said they were fine. He gave him a shot of Azium and Vetalog. So it’s now Wednesday morning and I took him out for a walk and his stool was watery/mucus green colored. I hope it is just the medicine wearing off. My dog eats and drinks just fine and plays with his toys and he doesn’t act sick at all. I also am in the process of switching his food from Authority Puppy Large Breed to Authority Lamb & Rice (The vet recommended it and just so everyone knows Authority is a PetSmart brand of dog food.)
Looking for a dog food suitable for both small and medium breeds?
Wednesday, July 13th, 2011I’m not really wanting to switch foods right now, just kind of looking. And, NO, I do not have a Costco near me.
I want something medium quality; not crappy, but not what y’all consider high quality. Just something midrange. I need something that is suitable for both Border Collies and papillons, so smaller bites but not formulated for large or toy breeds.
I’m currently feeding Pro Plan All Life Stages Lamb & Rice Formula Small Bites. My dogs are doing great on it, but it’s a little pricey.
Like I said, I don’t want anything like Pedigree or Beneful, nor do I want anything like Blue or Inova – just something in the middle.
ADD: I have a large number of dogs, so I use up a bag faster than most people with just one or two dogs would.
My dog is pooping out a brown jelly-like substance with some specks of blood?
Monday, June 27th, 2011Okay, I am super worried. The vet is closed already so I’m gonna take her tomorrow. My dog has been like this for 4 days straight & she kept me up ALL night taking her out every hour of the night. She poops out a jelly like substance that literally looks like egg whites but is brown. Today I discovered some red specks of blood on it. It’s not a lot but she does go out a lot so it adds up. I did change her food to the wellness brand & I made her try the 3 types for allergies. The duck & rice and salmon & rice didn’t cause this but the lamb & rice is triggering something & honestly this one she eats without a problem. She’s been off of her other food for 5 months onto this brand but I haven’t seen her devour her kibble like she has with the lamb & rice one. I’ve also been seeing her eat grass outside so can that be the problem. Please help I’m freaking out!
Feeding my 5 week old German Shepherd mix puppy?
Saturday, June 4th, 2011So, here is the story. This odd family had a pregnant German Shepherd mix adult female that they were not supposed to have because their residence didn’t allow pets. The landlord found out about her and said they needed to get rid of her within a certain amount of time. Immediately after being found out, she had the puppies. When the pups were 3 weeks old they started trying to find new homes before the family had to drop them all off at the pound… so I adopted one.
By the way, I have no idea what the mother was mixed with. She looked exactly like a short haired GSD except just not nearly as big.. She was probably only 30lbs. The family said that she was mixed with "wolf" but I highly doubt it. I also don’t know what my puppy is mixed with since they didn’t know what the father’s breed was. I’m guessing it was another medium to large breed dog, but my puppy has GSD markings and I can’t tell what the other breed is. Here is a link to her picture, maybe you can help me out haha:

Right after I got her, I took her to the vet and she gave me puppy vitamins and suggested that I feed her softened puppy food and follow the servings by whatever is printed on the bag (since my puppy wouldn’t take any formula). I bought Purina Pro Plan (Lamb and Rice) puppy food and she eats it like there is no tomorrow. The food bag says to feed her 1 cup a day so I’ve been giving her 1/2 a cup in the morning and 1/2 a cup in the evening. I feel like this isn’t enough since she eats so fast, like shes starving, but she has a full belly afterward so I think feeding her the whole cup at once would be too much in one sitting. So I guess my question to the experienced puppy owners would be, how much and how often should I feed her?
Also, in perusing the internet for answers, I’ve found out that some puppy foods contain "fillers" and cause the puppy to over-eat since its not getting proper nutrition. And also, some foods cause the puppy to grow too fast which results in bone deficiencies. So, what brand of food would you recommend that I buy to avoid these problems?
Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thank you!
