Non Beef dog food recipes needed…..?

Monday, August 22nd, 2011

My dog is a Lab that weighs about 57 pounds. He like most Labs is allergic to beef. The sell special dog food for dogs with beef allergies but its really, really expensive. I need recipes to give my dog the nutrients he needs from dog food that I can make on my own. Its scary because even the lamb and rice dog food has beef in it. Just about all the dog foods do except the high priced organic. so please help me with some great recipes. thanks.

How do I fatten up my dog?

Tuesday, August 9th, 2011

My 3 year old German Shepherd eats anymore from 6 – 8 cups of dry food a day and a can of wet food maybe 4 times a week. He is still so skinny. He has pretty bad allergies and take medication from the vet. Maybe once every 3 months he gets a steroid shot because his allergies are THAT bad. The vet said he’s not underweight but he just look so skinny. He eats Purina Lamb and Rice (as recommended by the vet for our other dog) and Purina one canned food. Any suggestions are great.

Here’s some pictures of him. He’s skinnier than he looks. http://www.flickr.com/photos/alexchristine96/6013067652/in/photostream/
He doesn’t like table scraps. Insane right?

8 month old puppy with diarrhoea?

Sunday, August 7th, 2011

Kai (puppy) woke me up in the night and currently now because he needed the loo, both times he had diarrhoea. He seems lively enough in himself, hes already barking XD I know that I must starve him for 24 hr then feed him bits of rice, gradually mixing with normal dog food. Is there anything I can give him in the meantime to ease the diarrhoea, our vet doesn’t open till 8am its 7am here. I have read that you can give a puppy imodium but I’m not sure how many and if it has to be the tablet form, as I only have imodium instants on hand.

Also this has happened before, I own a holiday home in an area where the water is classed as hard yet where I live its classed as soft, could this be affecting him? We went yesterday, if so I will have to keep some bottled water there for him

Heres some more info on Kai. He’s a 8 month and 3 week old rough collie puppy weight last time at the vets at 13.5kg. Known allergies are shellfish, any form of lamb meat. Not sure how helpful the last part is. He’s a digger and likes chewing on sticks. He’s currently on BETA puppy food, but lately we have been mixing it with butchers canned wet food, so thats another thing that might have to stop

Anyway sorry for typing so much, any help will be appreciated, thankyou.
Hi, thanx for your reply, we did ask pur vet about changing the puppy food over they said it was ok as long as we did it a bit at a time, we’ve been doing it for about 5 days now

Puppy spaying…?

Wednesday, August 3rd, 2011

My 6mo puppy is being spayed on Tuesday and I am concerned about caring for her post-surgery. I want her to be comfortable and nourished. She is a Shih Tzu and eats nothing but lamb and rice puppy food, broccoli, carrots and green beans. Is it okay to introduce her to chicken broth if she has never had chicken before?. I am concerned about allergies, as these dogs are prone to allergies. Also, she sleeps in bed with me but my bed is very high and I’m concerned about her falling off so I plan on laying my futon from the guest room on the floor and sleeping with her there. When should she poop after the surgery, when will she resume eating her food. How long should I keep her quiet? I’ve never been through this before. Will the vet offer pain pills for her or do I have to ask? I’ve heard that they don’t give pain pills. Don’t the poor things feel pain? I would think they do. Thanks for sharing your experiences and advice.

How can I know if my German Shepherd puppy has allergies?

Monday, July 4th, 2011

She’s eating California Natural Lamb and rice puppy formula now. She doesn’t have fleas. but she itches her legs and face and she gets these bald spots on her legs. its on and off. the bald spots(i guess there hot spots) come then disappear. And its like the area near her nose has parts of fur missing. Like she is breaking out. And she has diarrhea not very bad its better now. It is supposed to be a allergenic dog food. Oh and we have taken her to the vet alot! He says we should put her on Bil-Jac but that has wheat in it so I don’t know. What do we do to know if she has allergies and to what specific thing?

My dog is pooping out a brown jelly-like substance with some specks of blood?

Monday, June 27th, 2011

Okay, I am super worried. The vet is closed already so I’m gonna take her tomorrow. My dog has been like this for 4 days straight & she kept me up ALL night taking her out every hour of the night. She poops out a jelly like substance that literally looks like egg whites but is brown. Today I discovered some red specks of blood on it. It’s not a lot but she does go out a lot so it adds up. I did change her food to the wellness brand & I made her try the 3 types for allergies. The duck & rice and salmon & rice didn’t cause this but the lamb & rice is triggering something & honestly this one she eats without a problem. She’s been off of her other food for 5 months onto this brand but I haven’t seen her devour her kibble like she has with the lamb & rice one. I’ve also been seeing her eat grass outside so can that be the problem. Please help I’m freaking out!

Wellness- Super 5 Mix- Fish and Potato stool question?

Thursday, June 23rd, 2011

This has been the first food that my dog has done well on. But with that being said her stool is SO big and thick and she goes quite a bit and at times loose. I want to change her food because she can go up to 4x’s a day if she is running in the backyard (and its really loose then) and the stinky smell is all in her whiskers (despite how many times I wash it). She is a toy dog what weighs about 12 pounds (has gained weight on this food too). Aren’t the better dog food supposed to have "less stool? "
She tried high protein foods like Core (then developed crystals in her urine)…Natural foods like Solid Gold…Natural Balance but spit them out. All the really good foods appear to be high protein and I think they are going to be too rich for her. She also has slight allergies too. I thought about Wellness Lamb and Rice but worried it maybe too much. Any thoughts from experience would be appreciated. Thanks
Oh she’s not fat by any means. She was actually too skinny and the Wellness chunked her up a bit!

How do I begin brushing my dog's teeth?

Thursday, June 16th, 2011

Hi there! My dog’s vet commented on how great my dog’s teeth looked: pristine, white and beautiful. However, he ended the sentence with a question about how often I brushed them (I don’t) and telling me to do it regularly to avoid having problems in the future.

Well, this is a 14 month old rescued dog who has lived with us for only a couple of months so far. He has had some issues with allergies, so I feed him California Natural lamb meal and rice dry kibble and I supplement that with some canned food from EVO and other good brands for some extra protein and fat. He chews on kongs, nylabones, bully sticks, and real bones (the huge kind that cannot fit in his mouth so he won’t choke).

I recently bought him a doggie toothbrush and toothpaste kit at Petsmart. The brush is the kind with three heads that is supposed to make brushing easier by getting all three sides of the tooth at once.

However, I don’t know how to go about actually beginning this new regimen. He sniffed around the toothpaste a bit, but was very skittish about the toothbrush. Is this just the same desensitizing routine as with a crate, brushing and nail clipping (slowly and patiently, using plenty of treats)?

How often do you brush your dog’s teeth? Is twice a month enough? Do you think he will learn to enjoy it or will I have to schedule an hour every time he is due for a tooth brushing?!? Do you really think brushing like that is necessary or that alternatives such as dental sticks and other chew toys designed to clean their teeth are enough to get the job done? After all, dog toothbrushes are a fairly new invention, right? Any advice and educated opinions will be appreciated.

my dog (Dogo) smells after a bath…?

Wednesday, May 25th, 2011

she’s 10, was eating kibbles & bits for a long time, changed to real nutrients? a lamb & rice mix with no corn, she has spots that are almost like flea bites, but she gets frontline, has had a flea bath, & is getting probiotics mixed with her food. it is getting better, but she still gets a few of these spots, rubs them (rolling on her back) & they bleed slightly. she has not ever had fleas. she stays indoors, has been to the vet & given meds for "allergies" & she scratches her hair in places & has some slight bald spots.
